Licensing Program Manager (LPM) Sherelle Johnson and Licensing Program Analyst's (LPA's) Kareeca Sykes and D. Campos conducted an unannounced Case Management-licensee initiated inspection at Drena Brown family childcare home. LPM and LPA's met with Licensee's adult son Jaylen McKay and adult daughter Hazina Mckay. Present in the home were (licensee's two adult children, and her minor son who assist with day care, and (6) day care children consisting of (one infant and 5 preschoolers).

Initiated by the licensee, the purpose of today's inspection is to conduct a health and safety tour of the home's basement level to add it to the on-limit areas of the day care home. Licensee wants to add the basement level bedroom with attached bathroom to the day care as well as the upper level bedroom (nursery room) to the right of the bathroom.

A fire clearance was granted by the Oakland Fire Department on 5/9/2024 and received by the Oakland Regional Office on 5/9/2024 and indicates no children are allowed on the second floor AKA Master bedroom. Per verbal clarification from the fire inspector M. Yamaguchi the master bedroom which is on the main level to be kept off limits to day care children and the bathroom and room to the right of bathroom (nursery room) on the second level may be used for day care children.

During a previous inspection, the following corrections were required before granting approval of the above mentioned areas for day care use.
  • Remove hazardous items from upper level bedroom (nursery room) such as dangling or loose cables, broken or soiled furniture, infant devices in disrepair.
  • Crib mattresses shall be firm and covered with a fitted sheet that is appropriate to the mattress size to prevent dislodging.
