32 | Allegation- Staff left children unsupervised. According to the RP, on 09/23 C1 and C2 ran out of the Penguin classroom and S3 ran after both children leaving 7 napping children unattended for more than 5 minutes. No additional information was provided by the RP. Interviews with S2 revealed that S3 was recently hired and could have radioed in for assistance but under the situation, opted to run after the children. Interviews conducted with S3 revealed that they were alone patting children to sleep. C1 was awake, got out of the classroom and C2 followed. Per S3, they didn’t know what to do and tried to redirect both children who then ran out to the hallway and then to the book nook. S3 was trying to tell the children to come back but then both children ran to the kitchen which is approximately 64 feet away from the book nook. S3 followed C1 and C2 when they observed S5 stepping out of their class. S3 was told by S5 to return to class because they would be bringing both children back. Per S3 they returned back to class, locked the door, and waited for S5 to return with both children. According to S3, this all happened too fast, and it was less than 5 minutes.
Interviews conducted with S4 revealed that during naptime they heard children’s voices in the hallway that sounded like they were moving. S4 recalled looking outside and observed C1 and C2 running towards the other end of the hallway. S4 then heard a voice (believed to be S3) and observed S3 running after the children. Per S4, S5 came out of the classroom to assist S3 who told the staff to return to class with the napping children and followed C1 and C2 who were heading towards the kitchen. S4 states it all happened within a minute or two. Per S4s written statement, they asked S5 if they should radio for assistance and S3 replied “no I called it already;” however, S4 did not hear S3 ask for assistance. Interviews with S5 revealed that during naptime they were in the classroom and heard laughter in the hallway. Per S5, they thought it was a parent at first but S4 observed that it was C1 and C2 out in the hallway. S5 stated children ran towards the book nook and then ran to the kitchen. S5 also recalled being followed by S3 who left the Penguin classroom unattended with 7 napping children. Per S5, they told S3 they couldn’t leave the children unattended and S3 returned to the classroom. S5 stated that the incident was no more than 3 minutes. Per S5s written statement, they asked S3 if they radioed for assistance to which staff replied, “I did but I don’t think they heard me.” LPA interviewed C1 who made no disclosures. Interviews conducted with S1 thru 2 revealed having knowledge of the incident after it occurred. LPA conducted Interviews with P1 thru 7 who made no disclosures. LPA attempted to interview P1 and P7; however, parents did not return LPAs call. According to P2, P3, P4, P5, and P6 they do not have any issues or concerns regarding supervision.
Based on the interviews conducted with staff it is unknown for how long where the napping children left alone when S3 ran after C1 and C2. Interviews revealed that the incident occurred within 2-3 minutes. Written staff statements corroborate with the staff interviews.
