On 7/12/2022 Licensing Program Analyst (LPA) made an announced visit to Beach Cities Montessori pre-school for the purpose of conducting a case management - increase of capacity. The licensee is requesting to increase their capacity from 240 to 269 pre-school children. The licensee plans to use one classroom (rm. 12) on the upper level, previously the kinder class, to accommodate the increase in capacity. The class room is located on the south end of the open space class room. The facility has a private school affidavit on file for elementary age school children. There is an approved fire clearance on file conducted by Inspector Tim Harris of the culver city fire department with special conditions not exceed 63 persons on the second level which includes staff and only children ages 3-5.

LPA observed the following;

The classroom had age appropriate furniture and equipment the classroom was clean , no hazardous conditions where observed. Fire extinguishers where 2A10BC , last inspected 2/8/2022. There were two emergency exits leading to the lower level of the building .
The licensee has dedicated two individual restrooms to the pre-schoolers, with 1 toilet and 1 sink each for a total capacity of 30 children. Fixtures were standard sized, LPA observed adaptive, broad based stools to assist the children in using the fixtures. Cabinets had locks making contents inaccessible to children in care. No detergents or toxins were observed.
A first aid kit was observed in the classroom with the required essentials, scissors, bandages, tweezers,ointments and thermometers. The classroom temperature was comfortable, the building has a central heating and cooling system.

The indoor measurements were; 108564 divided by 35 square feet = 31 children

The facility has a a current outdoor activity space waiver and shall request a new waiver to support the increase in capacity.

Based on to days inspection and the waiver approval, the facility shall be recommended for an increase of 29 children bring their maximum capacity to 269 children

Facility representative was reminded that all adults 18 and over, including employees and volunteers, must obtain a criminal record clearance or exemption, or transfer their existing clearance or exemption, prior to initial presence in a Child Care Center. A civil penalty of $100.00 minimum/day up to $500.00 maximum per day/per person will be assessed if this regulation is violated.

LPA discussed the safe sleep regulations with facility representative and discussed the Child Care Licensing Safe Sleep webpage at https://www.cdss.ca.gov/inforesources/child-care-licensing/public-information-and-resources/safe-sleep as an additional resource. LPA also informed licensee [facility representative] of the importance of checking for recalled infant devices on the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website at https://www.cpsc.gov/ and recommended they register all infant devices with the CPSC to be notified of any recalls on their purchased equipment.
