32 | Allegation: Staff did not prevent the spread of illness at the facility
According to the allegation, there were several children with symptoms of diarrhea and staff did not do enough to prevent the spread of diarrhea in the preschool program.
According to the Unusual Incident Report submitted by the facility to the Department on 5/30/25, “Children with diarrhea who were not immediately picked up, were separated to a different area in the classroom”. Staff interviewed also stated children with diarrhea were kept in the classroom at one table until picked up by parents. During interviews, Staff #4 stated, “Some of the parents say they work an hour away and they can’t pick them up right away”. Staff #4 reported that one parent was notified to pick up their sick child at 1:00 pm but the child was not picked up in the classroom until 5:00 pm. Additionally, Staff #4 stated, “We try to keep the kids who are sick at a different table, but it’s hard. We have a sick room, but we have too many kids who are sick and not enough qualified staff to use the sick room in the office.” During interviews, Staff #2, Staff #4 and Staff #5 stated that despite their best efforts, they were unable to keep the ill children completely isolated from the well children in the classroom, while waiting for parents to pick up the ill children.
When asked about any policies the facility has for ill children returning back to school, the Academic Director stated, “We have a policy that ill children should be symptom free without the use of medication for 24 hours before returning to school. It says it on the Illness Report the parents receive”. However, when LPA reviewed children’s Illness Reports for the period during the facility outbreak of diarrhea, LPA observed Child #1 was sent home from the facility two days in a row for diarrhea. LPA showed the Academic Director the Illness Reports for Child #1 which show Child #1 was sent home with Diarrhea on two consecutive days. Academic Director stated that Child #1 should not have been accepted into the facility after being sent home with diarrhea the previous day. Staff #4 stated, “We
